How can you request a subscription?

You can request a paid subscription via the Digilegacy app. To do so, you first need to create an account in the Digilegacy app. Go to Log in in the top-right menu, and then select Sign up. After creating an account and confirming your email address, you can go to the menu icon in the top-right corner and select Subscription. There you can choose a subscription that suits you and activate it immediately.Once your subscription is activated, you will have immediate access to all Digilegacy features, including the next-of-kin service. Payment and subscription management are handled via Stripe's secure Billing Portal , where you can also manage your payment details. You can also cancel your subscription there at any time if you wish. You will still retain access to Digilegacy features until the end of the paid subscription period. The end of your subscription period can always be found on the homepage in the app after logging in.

How does Digilegacy handle my data?

Your data is stored carefully and securely. We never share information with third parties without your consent.Messages for next of kin are strongly encrypted client-side (128-bit), transmitted via secure channels, and stored in encrypted form. To create these encrypted messages, we use a zero-knowledge mechanism, which means we do not have access to the content of these messages. Only you and the next of kin you have designated can read them using an unlock code that is shown to you only once and must be shared with your next of kin. Without this code, neither you nor your next of kin can decrypt or view the contents of the messages.We take the privacy and security of your data very seriously and have implemented these measures to ensure that your information is safe with us.You remain in control: for each expense item, you decide whether it may be shared with your next of kin, and you can change this decision at any time.

How does the next of kin service work?

For each expense item, you indicate whether it may be shared or not. Only those shared expense items are accessible to your designated next of kin. You can also create messages intended for your next of kin. These messages are strongly encrypted (128-bit), transmitted, and stored securely. After a careful verification of the death, the designated persons are granted access exclusively to the shared items and the encrypted messages. Non-shared items always remain private.Next of kin should, in principle, be aware that information has been prepared for them, as you will have informed them of this at some point. The unlock code required to access the encrypted messages must also have been provided by you to your next of kin. How do I inform my next of kin about the service?

First, you indicate who your next of kin are by entering their email addresses in the app. You do this on the Legacy page. You can specify up to 5 next of kin. It is important that you inform your next of kin about the fact that you use this service and that, after your death, they can gain access to the shared information and the encrypted messages you have left for them. You can do this, for example, by telling them in person, or by sending a message in which you explain what Digilegacy is and how they can gain access to the information after your death. That way they know there is information waiting for them and what they need to do to view it.In any case, you let them know that, when the time comes, they can submit a request in the Digilegacy app for access to the shared information and the encrypted messages. See the FAQ ‘How should a next of kin submit a request for access to the deceased person’s shared information?’ for more details on how exactly this works. If you have also added encrypted messages, you must also indicate that they need an unlock code to gain access to the encrypted messages, and that they must have received this code from you. Without this unlock code, they cannot view the encrypted messages.It is important that you explain this clearly to your next of kin, so that they know there is information waiting for them and what they need to do to gain access to this information.

How should a next of kin submit a request for access to the deceased person's shared information?

To gain access as a next of kin to the shared information and encrypted messages, your next of kin must submit a request via the Digilegacy app. This can be done without creating an account. Multiple next of kin can submit a request simultaneously for the same deceased person, as long as they are included in the list of next of kin specified by the deceased.To do this, the next of kin must go to the public homepage of the Digilegacy app and click the “Inheritance” menu item. There, they can submit an access request by entering their email address and the email address of the deceased. After submitting the request, the system will check whether the next of kin’s email address matches the list of next of kin provided by the deceased user. Only if there is a match will the next of kin receive an email asking them to verify their email address.Once this has been completed, the next of kin will receive a confirmation email containing a link to a page where the status of the request can be viewed. The next of kin can always use this link to check the current status of the request and, once approved, also access the shared information and encrypted messages.

What happens when a next of kin has submitted a valid request for access to the deceased person’s shared information?

A request from a next of kin is only considered valid if the next of kin’s email address appears in the list of next of kin provided by the deceased user, and if the next of kin has received a confirmation email containing a link to a page where the status of the request can be viewed. During a fixed period of 30 days, the next of kin will see the number of days remaining until the request is approved, as well as the date on which this will occur.Meanwhile, from the first day of a valid request by a next of kin, the deceased user receives a daily warning email stating that a request has been submitted by a next of kin, including the email address of the person who submitted the request. The email also states that there is a fixed 30-day period before the request will be automatically approved.If the request is incorrect (i.e., the user is not actually deceased), the user is asked to easily cancel the request within those 30 days by logging in (which serves as proof that the user is still alive) and using the clearly marked red warning banner that appears at the top of every page to cancel the request.If the user does not respond to the emails and also does not log in during the 30-day period starting from the moment the request is submitted by the next of kin, the request will be automatically approved. The next of kin will then gain access to the shared data and the encrypted messages of the deceased user.

How does a next of kin gain access to the deceased person’s encrypted messages?
